We’re approaching this time of the year again. No, I’m not talking about Christmas, though the eager displays of blinking lights and Wham on the radio cannot go unnoticed. I mean the time for the well-known elevator small-talk of: “So, what are your plans for the New Year’s Eve?”
“I have no idea, to be honest!”
“I’ll probably see what’s going on closer to the time.”
“Oh, wow, you’re right, that’s soon. Haven’t even thought about it yet.”
Sounds all too familiar, right? Well, have no fear, The Real Malta is here! We have some great ideas for you to make it a night to remember!
What Are The Options?
You could always opt for a night in Valletta, where you’ll no doubt find things to do. After all, the celebrations are being organised by the Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture Foundation and they’re free. There will be a lot of good artists, several places to quench your thirst and fireworks to enjoy. Surprisingly, the latter are far less popular in Malta on New Year’s Eve than almost any other time of the year.
Or stroll to Paceville and just hit the club scene. No really, go wild and enjoy the variety of music, atmospheres and happy people! Don’t forget to have some shots at the stroke of midnight!
Villa in Gozo? Those are gone faster than fruit disappears from the common area at the office.
Renting a nice cottage or villa in Gozo would ensure a nice private evening, away from crazy crowds and loud fireworks. Plus, the picturesque atmosphere is to die for! Unfortunately, if you are just thinking about it now, you are way too late. Those places are rented out faster than fruit disappears from the common area at the office. Note to self for next year: start looking for a villa as soon as you see the first person putting on a cardigan.
Friends! Always friends! Make it a wonderful night, prepare a nice dinner, play games, have drinks and celebrate the arrival of the new year with hugs.

Think Outside the Box
Not really that much into crowds, crammed parties and the usual clink of champagne at midnight? No problem, we get you. How about some of those ideas instead?
Hobo it. Wear warm clothes, fill a backpack with drinks, nibbles, a blanket to sit on, grab your sweetheart by the hand and hit the road. Just start off from your home and see where you get to. Just in case you want to make sure your “completely random” walk magically ends up in the most romantic spot on the island, do some research beforehand.
Stay at home. Sounds boring? Ahh, my dear, it doesn’t have to be! First of all, you get to wear whatever you want, may it be a glittery pantsuit or your fleece PJs. Second, here’s the chance for you and your friends to get creative. We’ve listed some ideas to get you started, but feel free to improvise.
- Build a pillow fort in the middle of the living room, settle in, have your cocktails from sippy cups and listen to 90’s music all night long. Spice things up with a game of Jenga or Articulate.
- Read poetry out loud. Then discuss. Make sure to look, talk and act sophisticated. Cognac would be an excellent drink choice, though you can get away with wine.
- Total makeovers all around. Try weird clothes, new make-up for the ladies, fancy beard styles for the gentlemen, welcome the new year with a new hair colour – anything goes!
Open Skyscanner. Seriously, play along, it’ll be fun. Enter the following: From = Luqa Malta International (MLA), To = Everywhere, dates 30/12/2016 to 01/01/2017 and hit Search flights. What did you get? My top 3 shows I can go to Belgium for New Year’s Eve for just 74 EUR, to UK for 77 EUR and to Italy for 120 EUR. Why not? Be spontaneous and start your new year with an adventure!
Bottom Line
At the end of the day, what really matters the most, is not where you are, but who you are with. Choose a fun plan, make sure your friends are there to share it with you and we guarantee you’ll have an awesome time.
Let us know what you are planning to do this New Year’s Eve, we’re curious! Or maybe you have a crazy story from the past? Sharing is caring!
